老後は人生の一部であり、思ったよりもずっと早く始まる。ただ、それを後ろ向きにとらえる必要はない。むしろ老後は人生で一番楽しい時期かもしれない。とにかく全力を尽くして楽しむだけだ。老後を生き生きと過ごすことの大事さはよく耳にするが、大切な趣味を持つことが、人生を豊かに、そして老後を充実させる助けになることは知られていない。趣味とは単に自分の好きなことをするだけではない。刺激や生きる意欲を与えてくれることをするのも趣味といえる。本当の趣味というのは、どんなに小さな行為であっても、生きる意味を与えてくれる。

Manuel Bosch Barrett (Barcelona 1895-1961), lawyer, writer and translator. Named by the government of the Republic, between 1936 and 1939, he became president of the Mixed Tribunal of the New Hebrides (nowadays Vanuatu).
