1936年、国民蜂起の前日に、治安警備隊の刑事がナバラ州のレクンベリに着いた。市役所の守衛の命を奪った殺人犯の足跡を追ってきたのだ。守衛は強固なカルロス党員で、共和国側に属する村の教師の敵だった。あらゆる形跡が殺人の容疑者として教師を指し示していたが、ある若者のおかげで刑事は別の手がかりを見つける。その若者は役所の職員で、村のパン屋でもあった。生涯でたった1冊、繰り返し読んで暗記するほどになった本『ドン・キホーテ』からインスピレーションを受けてものを考えたり行動したりする人物だ。
