ジョルジュ・ミエはフランスの出版社ラ・フォルチュの依頼で大衆向けの物語を書いている。ある日担当編集者から、15年前の1925年夏、観光客でにぎわうビアリッツを揺るがした悲劇について「堅い」小説を書くようにとの依頼を受ける。地元の若い女性の死体が桟橋の金属の輪に縛りつけらて発見されたという事件だ。ジョルジュは現地に赴き、30名前後の人たちに話を聞く。彼らは様々な社会階層に属しているが、なんらかの形で被害女性と面識があった。
