20世紀の初め、ひとりの孤児が衝撃的な見世物を目の当たりにした。腹話術をする手品師が、金属の人形をしゃべらせ動かしている。しかし孤児は、手品だけではこの並外れた見世物は説明がつかないと思う。こうして孤児は手品師のパレルモ教授と出会い、100年もの歴史を見る特権を得た観客となり、想像もつかない最高の冒険をする。しかし、それには高い代償を払わなければならなくなる……。パレルモ教授とそのしゃべる金属の人形は、20世紀が始まろうとしていた時代、多くの人々を魅了していた。
