1530年、ひとりの若者が偉大な編集者アルド・マヌツィオの未亡人に近づき、亡夫の生涯に関する文章を見せる。真実の物語が、想像していた武勲とかけ離れていることは知られていない。マヌツィオはギリシャ文学の至宝の最高の版を作ろうと1489年にヴェネツィアに到着するが、手写本を盗まれたり、義父で印刷屋のトレサニに課金を要求されたり、若き妻マリアが入れ込んでいるエピクロス主義の流布に対して権力者の検閲が入ったり、想定外の困難に見舞われる。
