グロリアとマルセルは、それぞれの家族の過去を辿りながら、リオフリオにたどり着く。過去スペイン内戦の騒乱に巻き込まれた、山あいの小さな村だ。リチャードはジャーナリストで、スイスの高級リゾート地ロカルノで開催される経済サミットに関するニュースを取材中だが、60年代にまさに同じ場所で結ばれた別の情事そっくりの官能的な体験をする。その過去の情事こそグロリアとマルセルを苦しめている問題の元凶だった。
