16歳の少年サムエルが主人公の探偵小説。サムエルは家族の事情で、探偵事務所を経営している叔父のフアン・ドミンゴのもとに一時的に身を寄せ、叔父の新しい事件に協力することになる。ふたりで一緒に捜査するうちに、ラ・マンチャのワイン醸造家が高価な宝石〈ポリュペモスの目〉を盗まれたことを発端とする、張り巡らされた陰謀に気付く。事件にかかわりがあると見られるのはダミアン・ロメロという行方不明者とその同僚たち、古美術商、宝石商、骨董品を集める女性とその甥。
