むかしあるところに、国で一番力のある男になりたがっている王がいた。しかし、王の力は、未来がわかると言う魔術師にはかなわない。そこで王はある日、魔術師に未来が分からないことを証明してやろうと、あるたくらみを企てる。魔術師に本人の死ぬ日をたずね、まさにその瞬間に剣を抜いて、魔術師に死をもたらすのだ……。
ところが、王が想像だにしなかったことには、魔術師の答えを聞いた王は、自分の命よりも魔術師を大切にせざるを得なくなる。
