カダケス郊外の荒れた屋敷に住むサイモン・シュナイダーは、大成功を収めたある作家のために仕事をしている。その作家は自分のことをグラン・ブロスと呼ばせ、ニューヨークに隠れ住んでいる。サイモンは言ってみれば「北斎」のような存在。つまり、ほかの作家たちのために適当なフレーズを提供する仕事をしている。だが、その中にかの有名なトマス・ピンチョンがいることを彼は想像すらしていない。ある日の午後、無限を表す文章を思い出すことに行き詰ったサイモンは、屋敷を出て長い散歩にでかけ、失念した引用文を探す。
