Mikel Giokoetxea, better known as Goiko, was in his day one of the best homicide investigators, though he has had to scrape a living as a private detective since being forced to leave the Ertzaintza, the Basque police force, when his life, reputation and marriage were all ruined by the false accusation that he belonged to a paedophile ring. Transformed into a social leper, only a few friends help him by sending him clients, like the well-known Bilbao notary who turns up in his office one day, asking him to investigate the death of his wife, who he suspects was murdered. Goiko soon finds out that there is a dangerous web of circumstances behind the woman’s death which unfolds in the pages of this intriguing novel.
