The book analyses Darwinism in terms of the history of the Natural Sciences and its appearance in secondary school textbooks in the last third of the 19th century in Spain and England. It demonstrates how, when and what values Darwinism first introduced into Spanish and English classrooms, the resistance to its being taught, the positions of the political and academic authorities, the role of the Church in the two countries and the attitude of organisations idependent of the State. The preliminary section focuses on Darwin and his theory. The first part studies Darwinism in the textbooks of the high Spanish Restoration; the second examines Darwinism in English natural history textbooks before and after The Origin of the Species and its teaching in public schools. The book concludes with an epilogue and various appendices. There is a prologue by Diego Núñez.
