This book starts from the premise that within the European Left, which has cherished such a strong desire for equality and social justice, a collectivist impulse, at times authoritarian, has become apparent, contrary to the best ideals of emancipation. This impulse spanned the entire 20th century and is still present in part of the Left at the start of the 21st.
