Giner, professor of sociology at the Universidad de Barcelona, has taught at King's College Cambridge and at the universities of Puerto Rico, Reading, Lancaster, Brunel West (London), Yale and Pompeu Fabra. He has held positions at several national and international organisations in his specialism. Noteworthy among his publications are Historia del pensamiento social, Cotemporary Europe (! and II), El progreso de la Conciencia sociológica, Mass Society, La Sociedad Corporativa, Ensayos civiles, España: sociedad y política (co-author), Religión y sociedad en España (co-author), Formas modernas de religión (co-author), and Carta sobre la democracia. Is he is co-author of Universalidad y diferencia, Diccionario de sociología and Manual de civismo. Currently he is president of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, academy of sciences and humanities.
