The author is a research professor at the Aragon Institute for Nanoscience and Materials (CSIC-Zaragoza University). In 2007 he worked in Paris with Albert Fert, who won the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the giant magnetoresistance effect, a phenomenon that enables the detection of tiny electromagnetic fields like those produced by neurones. The author is now president of the Condensed Matter Division of the European Physics Society and has published more that two hundred research articles. In 2021 he was elected as a fellow of the American Physics Society.
