José López Rubio en avioneta de feria
José López Rubio

The achievements of José López Rubio (Motril 1903 – Madrid 1996) were recognised in 1994 when he was awarded the Medalla al Mérito for Fine Arts. He described himself as one of the members of the 'other Generation of '27', which also included early Twentieth century restorers of the comedic genre such as Enrique Jardiel Poncel, Miguel Mihura, Edgar Neville and Tono, during his introductory speech to the Real Academia de la Lengua. They were a group of humourists, followers of Ramón Gómez de la Serna, who found theatre, and for some of them later cinema (José López Rubio worked in Hollywood) to be their preferred mode of expression. In spite of this, they were overlooked and almost forgotten as a result of critical prejudice that considered humour to be a lesser genre. 2016 marked twenty years since López Rubio's death and this remains one of the most important humorous novels of the Spanish vanguard.
