Almudena Grandes (Madrid, 1960-2021) first rose to prominence in 1989 with Las edades de Lulú (‘The Ages of Lulu’), which won the XI Premio La Sonrisa Vertical. Her novels, including Te llamaré Viernes (‘I’ll Call You Friday’) and Los besos en el pan (‘Kisses in the Bread’), along with her short story collections such as Estaciones de paso (‘Passing Seasoons’) have made her an essential author. The climax of her career were the five novels that formed ‘Episodes from an Interminable War’. Her work has been adapted for both stage and screen and she won, among others, the Premio de la Fundación Lara, prizes awarded by the booksellers of both Madrid and Seville, The Archbishop Juan de Clemente prize, the Rapallo Carige prize, the Prix Méditerranée, the Jean Monet prize, the Premio de la Crítica de Madrid, the Premio Elena Poniatowska, the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz prize and the Premio Nacional de Narrativa. Her death in 2021 had a deep impact and prompted an outpouring of emotion from her thousands of readers.
