Spain's publishing industry is the third largest in Europe after the UK and Germany. It generated over £2.5 billion in revenue in 2007, an increase of 3.6% over the previous year.
The number of books sold in 2007 totalled 251 million, almost 10% more than in 2006, and the average price per copy was £9.8. The total number of titles published rose to 70,520, with 53.9% of them new releases or first editions and 46.1% reissues or reprints. The average print run per title was 5,070 copies, an increase of 165 copies per title.
Spain is home to more than 1,600 literary competitions, many sponsored by publishing houses or small municipalities. Prize money ranges from a nominal 300 euros (₤200) to the far from nominal 601,000 euros (₤400,000) of the Premio Planeta.
Spain's Ministry of Culture is keen to support the translation into other languages of works written in Spanish, Catalan, Basque and Galician. Grants are awarded annually and the deadline usually falls at the end of March/April.
