Kidnap in Hong Kong takes place in Tenerife, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Lijiang, with a new case for the series' heroine, Inspector Maria Anchieta, who must investigate the disappearance of a Spanish student in Hong Kong during the Umbrella Revolution at the end of 2014. The novel is also an exploration of China and the cultural and political differences between the East and West. There is one character, the Chinese man Li, to whom the author at first gives little importance, but who gathers strength towards the end of the novel. In the words of editor Jose Vicente Kataraín, from publishers Oveja Negra: “For me the heart that pumps energy through the whole novel is this new, non-Western, character Li, who takes the plot to an unexpected ending."
