Welcome to the Autumn issue of newspanishbooks.com

Just when LIBER opens its doors and Frankfurt is preparing to launch its next edition, we bring you fresh information on Spanish titles with available translation rights. With more than 8 000 users, newspanishbooks.com is proving a useful resource, already offering data on 549 titles. The rights of several titles featured in the website have been bought, among others: K.L. Reich (Joaquim Amat-Piniella) to be published by Five Leaves, Abril Rojo (Santiago Roncagliolo) bought by Grove Atlantic, Los girasoles ciegos (Alberto Méndez) published by Arcadia Books in May, Los libros arden mal (Manuel Rivas) to be published by Harvill Secker and Nadie ama a un policía (Guillermo Orsi) bought by MacLehose Press.

In this issue, there are 195 books with rights belonging to 59 publishing houses and 11 literary agents; eleven reviews provided by our network of readers on a shortlist of titles specially chosen by a panel of experts constituted this time by Rowan Cope (Little, Brown), Gary McKeone (literary consultant), Nicholas Caistor (BCLT, translator), Martin Schifino (translator), Jonathan Ruppin (Foyles) and Philip Gwyn Jones (Portobello Books); an interview with Christopher McLehose, expert in literature in translation and founder of MacLehose Press; an article by writer and literary consultant Gary McKeone and much more. We hope you enjoy the read.

New Spanish Books is a joint project of the Spanish Publishers' Association (FGEE) and the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX) with the assistance of the Economic and Commercial Office of the Spanish Embassy in London.

Feature Article

Gary McKeone, writer and literary consultant, delights us with the tale of his approach to Spanish and his journey through Spain. He was Literature Director at Arts Council England for ten years and he is now Chair of the Poetry Archive and the recently created Poetry Translation Centre. He is also involved with a number of other literature organizations in England and works in a freelance capacity on a number of arts projects.

Christopher MacLehose, founder of the publishing house MacLehose Press, has devoted his life to the publishing industry, specialising in literature in translation. Christopher talked to us in his favourite place, a tiny and charming Ethiopian restaurant in north London and shared his views on literature in translation, the process of publishing translations and his efforts to bring the best of foreign literature to the UK.
